Mixed Media in Motion
This was an exciting self-directed project with the goal of discovering how my rough 2D animations could be elevated with the power of collage. The base movement for this character was created in TVPaint.
Collecting the Canvas
Then it was time to build my digital paper puppet. Preproduction consisted in planning how this “skater boy” would look and move as he glided down the street. An afternoon was spent downloading and editing various stock images. In using this method, I felt like a treasure hunter scavenging for that perfect picture. For the sake of consistency and maximum creative control, I decided to take my own pictures for the hands and shoes.
Each new drawing required a new asset to be cut and edited with Photoshop. By the end of the process I had my unique appendages layers on top of each other, ready to be imported into After Effects.
Using the same technique as before, I wrapped and stitched stock images of buildings together. It didn’t need to be perfect, but it needed to help sell the illusion that our skater is flying down the street with a satisfying loop.
